Located in the heart of La Réunion’s capital, the Saint-Denis Cathedral is one of the island’s most iconic monuments. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1975, it is celebrated for its unique blend of architectural styles and its central role in the region’s religious and cultural life.
Construction of the cathedral began in 1829 and was completed in 1832, although the porch was only added in 1863. Before becoming the cathedral we know today, the building was known as the Church of Saint-Sauveur. It gained cathedral status in 1850 when the Apostolic Prefecture of Bourbon became a diocese. The site had been planned long before - as early as 1733 - by the city’s designer, engineer Paradis.
Over the years, various enhancements shaped the cathedral’s current appearance, including the addition of a metal bell tower and interior renovations that restored its historic splendour. A major restoration in 1990 refreshed the interior while preserving its period charm, making it both a place of worship and a living testament to the island’s history.
The exterior of the cathedral is striking, especially in the evening when purple-toned lighting enhances the building’s architecture. Nestled in a pleasant pedestrian area, the cathedral is an ideal starting point for a stroll. Nearby, you’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy local cuisine after your visit.
The cathedral is open daily to the public.
